Buddha stood before his disciples, and without speaking a word, held up a lotus flower. No one understood the meaning, as He stood silently, except for Mahakasyapa, who smiled, perceiving the insight of this powerful unspoken message.

It is said that Buddha responded to his smile, saying, “I possess the true Dharma eye, the marvelous mind of Nirvana, the true form of the formless, the subtle dharma gate that does not rest on words or letters but is a special transmission outside of the scriptures. This I entrust to Mahākāśyapa.“
